JOB SUMMARY
Conduct activities dealing with and implementing lean principles as well as provide engineering support to Production, QA, Maintenance, and the other Engineering departments as needed. The Lean Process Engineer will also be required to do any and all tasks deemed necessary by his or her supervisor for the safe and efficient operation of the company and to meet production demands.
SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILTY
This position reports directly to the Process Engineering Director and supervises the employees within the Lean division of Process Engineering.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The position of Lean Process Engineer requires the following minimum qualifications:
- EDUCATION: Degree in Engineering
- LICENSING/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION: Driver’s license.
- SME Lean Bronze (or equivalent) certification preferred.
- SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES:
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing effectively to the extent required by the position, in particular with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technically oriented people.
- Ability to effectively and cooperatively work with other people both in and outside the company.
- Ability to read and understand mechanical and engineering drawings.
- Proficient in use of measuring tools such as calipers and micrometers.
- Ability to learn Statistical Process Control.
- Ability to relate to and get along with fellow employees and management.
- Knowledge of CAD drawing environment, drafting.
- Familiarity with production facilities.
- Understanding manufacturing machinery and tools and their usage.
- Strong technical, report and instruction writing ability.
- Proficiency in applying basic electrical principles
- Ability to understand and interpret technical and non-technical written and verbal information and instructions.
- Proficient in researching technical questions
- Strong understanding of Lean Manufacturing principles and the ability to apply them as well as training other employees in them.
- Ability to learn basic machine programming, including CNC g-code, and PLC ladder logic.
- WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to meet the working conditions and physical demands identified below.
- BODY SENSES: ALL - Ability to use of all body senses.
- MENTAL: The ability to read and write. Ability to read and understand instructions, specifications and illustrations. Ability to reach logical conclusions and visualize results of specific activities so that all work is done in a safe and productive manner.
- MATHEMATICS: Add, Subtract, Multiply, Divide, Statistics, Algebra, and Trigonometry as required by the demand of the position. Must be able to evaluate product specifications and tolerances. Must be comfortable evaluating physics, metallurgical, chemical, and similar problems.
- LANGUAGE: English
- MECHANICAL: Must have strong mechanical skills and understanding of general production techniques. Must be able to evaluate mechanical interactions and troubleshoot problems related to machinery.
- SPATIAL: Must be able to imagine three dimensional objects and visualize the effect of rotating them.
ESSENTIAL AUTHORITIES, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND DUTIES
This position has the following authorities, responsibilities, and duties:
AUTHORITIES: The position of Lean Process Engineer includes all authority necessary to produce products and parts as assigned by the Process Engineering Director. This includes authority to direct or perform all activities which are within the Process Engineer’s defined span of control, and which are necessary for the organization to maintain its production fabrication machinery. All such activities are to be carried out within the bound of established policies and procedures.
RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES: The Lean Process Engineer is responsible for:
- Become a lean leader for the company. Striving to instill a continuous improvement culture throughout.
- Coach and mentor employees (new and existing) to ensure continued development of lean.
- Work with management to develop lean goals for the company to measure success.
- Be in charge of the company’s 5S program. Ensure employees are trained and audits are being done.
- Conduct regular Kaizen events improving processes and identifying key KPI’s.
- Operating under only general supervision, perform the necessary specialized or technical functions as assigned, in order to advance the general business operations of the company.
- Demonstrate consistently good attendance and reliability.
- Exercise effective planning and time utilization, using all available work time in a manner which will benefit the organization and contribute to the smooth operation of the business.
- Exercise the discretion, independent sound judgment and, decision making (a reasonable approach). Good judgment/decision making shall be construed to mean: evaluating the seriousness of a problem and the amount of time required to correct the problem. Such judgment/decision making shall also include the ability to determine when problems require being brought to the attention of others.
- Maintain a professional attitude and a cooperative working relationship with all employees of the organization - assisting others when feasible unless such assistance shall negatively impact your job. Any difficult situation which may arise is to be handled in a tactful manner. Utilize the formal chain of command to properly address those situations which may need follow-up or actions beyond the immediate time.

- Maintain systems, processes, methods and procedures that effectively promote the products of the organization, contribute to the smooth operation of the business, and effectively safeguard the organization.
- Processing WPG Requests as assigned, follow up on Requests as needed, and coordinate activities required by Requests assigned.
- Reporting any deviations from policy or procedures to your Supervisor. Report any deviations from Quality or Production Procedures to Quality Assurance Team and the effective Supervisor.
- Performing follow-up on Operator Requests. Proposing solutions to problems and confirm that solutions have been implemented.
- Provide engineering support to Production, QA, and other engineering departments as required.
- Perform tests to qualify parts specifications or processes when necessary.
- Assist in the development of Quality Control procedures that include: inspection procedures, process procedures, and process monitoring procedures.
- Evaluate operations for effectiveness and work to improve manufacturing processes by developing production procedures, designing fixtures and tooling, and improving the efficiency of machinery and tooling.
- Audit processes to ensure they are being performed according to established procedures, the procedures are correct and up to date, and the processes are efficient.
- Must have sound understanding of lean manufacturing principles and assist in implementing them.
- Keep and maintain adequate files on all activities.
- Initiate paperwork, in accordance with the appropriate quality procedure, for any corrective action that is required.
- Function as a resource for production operators who have questions.
- Assist maintenance personnel as needed.
- Review engineering specifications and manufacturing processes to make them as efficient as possible.
- Meet schedules as set by your Supervisor.
- Make certain that products meet acceptable quality standards.
- Review all projects leaving his/her area indicating that the work is complete and accurate.
- Abide by all company policies and procedures.
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS
In general, the working conditions are as follows:
- Time will be spent in an office environment, roughly 50%, and in a production environment roughly 50%. Production floor environments. Frequent exposure to noise, heat, fumes, dust, and hazardous chemicals.
- Normal full-time working hours for your position will be specifically assigned by your supervisor but generally are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday. Alternative shifts may be assigned or requested. Each such shift normally has:
- One (1) hour off for lunch.
- Morning Break: 20 minutes
- Afternoon Break: 20 minutes
- Breaks are not guaranteed. They are provided at management's discretion and may be rescinded at any time without notice. Breaks represent "opportunities" to break from your work. These opportunities are "not" available for use if any one of the following two conditions exist:
- You are engaged in a work activity that should not be interrupted, where such interruption adversely affects the quality of the product or part being manufactured and/or the efficiency of your job as described in this position guide.
- You are about to engage in a work activity that, if delayed, adversely affects the quality of the product or part being manufactured and/or the efficiency of your job as described in this job description.

The position requires the following:
- Must be able to consistently work in the environment identified above.
- Must be able to walk, sit, stand, bend, reach, and carry throughout the shifts identified above.
- Must be able to consistently lift 50 lbs. from a floor or table position to chest high using a proper lifting technique and repetitively use arms, hands, and fingers in the manipulation of parts.
- Must demonstrate good hand/eye coordination and demonstrate good manual dexterity.
- Must be able to stand throughout the shifts identified above.
- Must be able to perform all necessary functions throughout the shifts identified above, on a continuing basis.
- Must be able to repetitively use arms, hands, and fingers in the manipulation of parts.
- Must be willing to travel for extended periods of up to a week at a time.
